FAQ

Why Clean Shower Water Matters

Is the water in the US really affecting my skin and hair?

The water in the US is not as clean as many people assume. In addition to chlorine, our water supply can contain heavy metals such as magnesium, calcium, copper, lead, and arsenic, along with other contaminants that result from human-led processes, including pesticides that enter the water supply through farmland, chemical waste from factories, city sewage, and aging pipes.

We created a water report tool to help educate people about the chemicals found in their shower water. Enter your zip code and we will email you a report for your own municipality, built from public data and covering more than 99 contaminants that could be present in your shower water.

What is actually happening to my skin and hair when the water is not clean?

Your skin is your body's largest organ. When you shower, it absorbs water like a sponge. Showering in unclean water has real implications for your beauty routine, including premature aging, dry skin, acne, dandruff, psoriasis, and damaged hair.

Chlorine and other contaminants strip the natural oils from your hair and skin, break down amino acids in the hair shaft, dissolve hair lipids, irritate skin, and react with natural melanin, which can change your hair color. Heavy metals can also speed up collagen loss by encouraging free radicals to form.

What is the difference between hard water and soft water?

Hard water contains a high quantity of dissolved minerals, primarily calcium and magnesium. Soft water has been treated so that the only remaining ion is sodium.

Rainwater is naturally soft. As it travels through the ground and into waterways, it picks up minerals like chalk, lime, calcium, and magnesium and becomes hard. Hard water is responsible for spotted dishes, dingy laundry, and soap scum buildup. It also makes soaps and shampoos less effective, because its reaction with calcium and magnesium produces a weaker lather and can leave hair feeling sticky and dull.

Which skin and hair types benefit most?

Every skin type can benefit from filtered shower water. It may be especially helpful for individuals experiencing premature aging, dry skin, acne, dandruff, psoriasis, eczema, itchy or irritated skin, color-treated hair, or hair that feels damaged or brittle.

How the Filtration Works

How does it filter out chemicals? Is this like a Brita?

Similar in principle to a Brita, our filter uses the pressure of your water to push it through an integrated filter cartridge. The important difference is the media inside.

Most shower filters use carbon, which does not perform well under the actual conditions of a shower, meaning hot water at high velocity. We focused on the two best media for those conditions: KDF-55 and Calcium Sulfite.

What is KDF-55?

KDF-55 consists of high-purity copper-zinc granules designed specifically for removing chlorine and heavy metals at high pressure and higher temperatures. It works by transforming chlorine into harmless chloride through a redox reaction. We include more KDF-55 than any other shower filter on the market.

What is Calcium Sulfite and why is it used?

Calcium Sulfite is used specifically for chlorine removal, and it performs reliably in hot water where other media degrade quickly. Combined with KDF-55, it maximizes the total amount of chlorine removed over the life of the filter.

Has this been independently tested?

Yes. We have conducted testing with the most reputable third-party laboratories in the United States, confirming that the filtered showerhead removes chlorine at over 85% for the full lifespan of the filter, assuming multiple people shower at least once a day for 90 days.

That far exceeds NSF-177 certification, the recognized authority on water filtration, whose standard requires 50% chlorine removal.

Will it reduce my water pressure?

No. It was designed and built to maximize the pressure coming from your pipes and will not reduce your existing pressure.

The filter uses a 125-micron stainless steel mesh that allows water to flow through at a high rate, and the media particle size was chosen specifically to maintain pressure and prevent clogging during the filter's lifecycle.

Installation and Fit

How does installation work?

It takes about five minutes and requires no plumber. Three simple steps:

Step 1: Remove your existing shower head using the adjustable wrench included with every purchase.

Step 2: Your new showerhead comes preloaded with a filter, so there is nothing to install. You can unscrew the face to double check that the filter is seated correctly.

Step 3: Wrap the exposed pipe threads twice with the included plumber's tape and tear. Twist the showerhead on until snug, then give it a final turn with the wrench to make sure there are no leaks.

Do I need to hire a plumber?

No plumber is necessary. Just follow the included how-to guide. If you do need assistance or have any questions, reach out through our Contact page and we will walk you through it.

Will it fit my shower?

Yes. The standard thread size for modern shower heads in the United States is 1/2 inch. As long as you have shower arm plumbing coming from your ceiling or your wall, it will fit. It is a simple screw off, screw on swap.

What is in the box?

Your order includes:

  • One filtered showerhead
  • One replacement filter, already installed inside the showerhead
  • One adjustable wrench
  • One roll of plumber's tape, pre-measured to reduce waste
  • One three-step installation guide
  • One letter from us to you

The box itself is made from biodegradable reclaimed cardboard and paper pulp, and it is designed to be reused if you decide to make a return.

Filters and Subscriptions

Do I need to replace the filter?

Yes. Your showerhead includes one filter, which is good for approximately three months of clean water.

When we tested competing shower filters, we found that claims of a six month lifespan were, in reality, closer to three, and that 90% or higher chlorine reduction rates were only true for the first week. Our filter is built to last a full three months at an effective rate you can trust for its entire use.

Is there a subscription for replacement filters?

Yes. Your showerhead comes with one filter, good for three months of clean water. You can sign up for a filter subscription so we handle the replacement planning for you and keep your shower completely carefree.

Subscriptions can be paused, skipped, or cancelled at any time with no fee and no minimum commitment.

How do I know when to change the filter?

As a general guide, replace the filter every three months, or roughly every 90 days. If you live in an area with very hard water or higher contaminant levels, or if several people shower daily, you may want to replace it slightly more often.

Subscribing is the easiest way to stay on schedule, because we send the reminder and the filter.
